‘Cuckoo, cuckoo – there’s blood on the shoe. She is not the right bride for you.’

-From an old version of Cinderella

Fairy tales lead us down a dark path through a magical and terrifying forest, to another world of enchantment which is filled with both good and evil. Sometimes, they impart wisdom for those willing to listen and they still possess the power to impact the modern literary world by inspiring multiple retellings.

Today, many fairy tales have been simplified and sanitised from their original frightening forms. But if you like your tales dark, I hope you’ll join me as we explore some of the older versions of our favourite stories.

Nicole Hurley-Moore lives with her family just outside a small country town in the Victorian Central Highlands. She writes full time, is a closet medievalist and a fan of happily ever afters.  Generally she concentrates on writing contemporary rural stories but occasionally dabbles in the odd medieval tale. Her books include McKellan’s Run, Hartley’s Grange, Country Roads, White Gum Creek, Lawson’s Bend, The McCalister Legacy and Summer at Kangaroo Ridge which are published through Allen & Unwin.
